Hill's Science Diet Cat Food
The Healthy Choice

Hill's Pet Nutrition has been manufacturing Science Diet cat food and dog food since 1939, when two veterinarians decided to start a company making premium cat food.

You'll find a number of "prescription diet" items in their range that are available through pet pharmacies or a veterinarian. Don't worry; these special foods do not contain medications or drugs.

Instead, they contain certain minerals and vitamins that are conducive to improving a variety of health conditions such as:

  • Feline lower urinary tract disease
  • Gastrointestinal diseases
  • Obesity
  • Food allergies
  • Heart disease
  • Tartar prevention
  • Kidney and liver disease

Ingredients in Science Diet

Science Diet Cat Food

Some of the ingredients in Hill's Science Diet cat food have been under questioning for their non-nutritious value.

Ingredients such as by-products, corn gluten meal, powdered cellulose, and soybean oil are just a few. You may know that Science Diet is more expensive than other cat food brands, although these same ingredients are also in the mix of many other cat food recipes.

Some of Science Diet's specially formulated foods, on the other hand, do contain nutritional supplements that may improve your cat's health.

Some of these ingredients are:

  • Vitamin B12, E, D3 and A
  • Thiamine and niacin (good for brain, joint, digestive and coat health)
  • Riboflavin (also known as Vitamin B2) and biotin (helps with the nervous system)
  • Folic acid (Vitamin B9)
  • Minerals like manganese oxide and copper sulfate (necessary for converting the iron into hemoglobin)
  • Beta-carotene ( is converted to vitamin A)

Taurine is also found in Science Diet, which is an essential amino acid that is vital to a cat's heart and vision functioning as well as its reproduction system.

While the majority of mammals create taurine using additional amino acids, cats are unable to produce the amount necessary to remain healthy unless they are living in the wilds and eating plenty of fresh, protein-rich meat.

Wet cat food made by Hill's Pet Nutrition has twice as much taurine than dry cat food. This is because the canning process somehow increases the amount of taurine in the canned food. Researchers investigating this occurrence have yet to discover exactly how and why this happens.

How Much to Feed an Adult Cat?

According to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, age and health of the cat makes a difference in the amount of food a cat needs to eat daily. Kittens require more food than adult cats because they are more active and should eat three times a day.

Once they have reached six months of age and are healthy, two times a day is sufficient.

Although most cats will eat enough to satisfy their appetite and then stop, some will have the tendency to overeat and gain weight, especially cats kept mostly indoors. Obese cats may overeat due to boredom or an underlying medical condition such as diabetes or hypothryroidism that facilitates weight gain.

Talk to your veterinarian if you are worried about your cat's health and the different kinds of Science Diet food that may improve certain feline-specific medical conditions.

Always remember that dramatically changing your cat’s diet can be traumatic to your pet, so be sure to make the change gradually so that your furry friend does not wholly reject their food.
